BRIGHTON, Mass. – Swinging 17 hits (season high) on Friday, the Virginia Tech baseball team outslugged and outlasted No. 23 Boston College as the Hokies held off the Eagles, 9-8, in 11 innings at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Harrington Athletics Village.

Senior shortstop Pete Daniel went 4-for-5 to lead Virginia Tech (16-16, 7-9 ACC), which chalked its third victory against a D1Baseball ranked opponent this season. Ethan Ball and Henry Cooke both charted three hits apiece while Hudson Lutterman and Owen Petrich both mashed multiple extra-base hits for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech struck first, two batters into the ballgame, on a solo home run by Ball, who extended his team lead in the category with his seventh homer of the season. After Boston College (24-12, 9-7 ACC) had answered with solitary runs during the second and third innings, the Hokies relied on Cooke’s leadoff double during the fourth inning to spark a three-run rally that featured a two-run home run by Petrich – the 30th of the fifth-year infielder’s career.

Sophomore starter Logan Eisenreich shined on the mound for Virginia Tech, logging the longest outing of his collegiate career, carving six strikeouts through five innings of work. Eisenreich retired the final eight batters he faced, receiving a solo home run from Lutterman during the fifth inning that boosted the Hokies’ lead to 5-2.

With Preston Crowl on the mound, Carter Hendrickson brought the Eagles back into the contest with his two-run home run during the bottom of the sixth inning that reintroduced a one-run game. However, Crowl recovered to blank BC during the seventh and eighth innings, returning to pitch the ninth inning with Virginia Tech holding the 6-4 lead.

Boston College managed to extend the game during the bottom of the ninth inning, relying on back-to-back doubles by Julio Solier and Ty Mainolfi – the second of which scored the Eagles’ two game-tying runs.

Virginia Tech turned a one-out walk by Daniel into the go-ahead run during the top of the 10th inning as Ethan Gibson and Sam Gates followed with base hits. However, BC responded during the bottom of the inning, manufacturing a run without a hit, scoring the game-tying run on a two-out wild pitch by Luke Craytor.

Committed to victory, Lutterman stepped up during the top of the 11th inning and barreled the go-ahead, RBI triple into the left field corner, scoring Sam Grube to put the Hokies ahead, 8-7. Two batters later, Daniel followed with a much-needed RBI single that plated Lutterman, providing the visitors with a two-run cushion.

Behind a one-out double by Jack Toomey, Boston College answered for one run during the bottom of the 11th inning, but not two, as Virginia Tech secured the series-opening triumph.
