Hokie ClubCHARLOTTE, N.C. – Capping off a phenomenal week in the circle, Bree Carrico and Emma Mazzarone were tabbed ACC Freshman of the Week and ACC Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Additionally, Carrico also garnered D1 Softball National Freshman of the Week honors.
The R-Fr. was lights out in the circle for Virginia Tech, posting three wins over 11.0 innings pitched. She recorded 16 strikeouts over her three appearances and held opponents to a .029 batting average. Over the 11.0 innings, Carrico allowed just one hit.
In Tech’s 7-1 win over Longwood, Carrico recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in just 4.0 innings pitched. She held Longwood to no hits as well.
Carrico was crucial in the Hokies’ 11-3 run-rule win over NC State on Saturday. The Appomattox, Va., native pitched 6.0 innings and held the Wolfpack to just one hit and recorded six strikeouts.
In Tech’s 2-1 win over the Wolfpack in the series finale, Carrico came in with the game tied 1-1 and forced three outs in the top of the seventh, setting the Hokies up for success in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off.
Mazzarone excelled in the circle as well, pitching 11.0 innings pitched and only allowing four hits while recording 17 strikeouts.
She pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout with eight strikeouts in Tech’s 10-0 win over the Wolfpack on Friday.
Against the Wolfpack on Sunday, Mazzarone threw 6.0 innings pitched with no earned runs and nine strikeouts. Across both appearances, she held the Wolfpack to a .108 batting average.
The Hokies are back in action against Boston College (March 20-22) in Brighton, Mass.
