BLACKSBURG – No. 12/14 Virginia Tech (28-4, 4-2 ACC) secured the series sweep over NC State with a 2-1 win on Sunday at Tech Softball Park.
Tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, Michelle Chatfield hit a walk-off single to left field to win the game for the Hokies, 2-1.
How It Happened
The Hokies scored first in the bottom of the second when Nora Abromavage launched a solo shot home run to left center to make it a 1-0 game.
In the top of the third, NC State capitalized on two Tech throwing errors and saw one run cross the plate to tie the game.
Tech had a chance with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, but were unable to bring any runners home.
In the bottom of the seventh, Rachel Castine led off the inning with a single to right center. Annika Rohs delivered a clutch sacrifice bunt to advance pinch runner Sara McNelly to second, and a groundout by Addison Foster put McNelly on third.
After Jordan Lynch drew a walk, Michelle Chatfield recorded a clutch walk-off RBI single to left field to bring McNelly home and win the game.
Emma Mazzarone was stellar for the Hokies in the circle as she struck out nine batters and allowed just two hits over 6.0 innings pitched. Bree Carrico came in for relief in the top of the seventh and recorded the final two outs before Tech went to the bottom of the seventh.
