MIAMI, Fla. — Virginia Tech opened its outdoor track and field season Friday at the Hurricane Invitational, with Yekini Bowen recording a top-10 program mark and leading three Hokies to event victories.
Bowen won the discus with a throw of 57.64 meters (189 feet, 1 inch), opening both his indoor and outdoor seasons at Virginia Tech with a victory and a top-10 mark. He opened the indoor season with a throw of 17.75 meters in the shot put before improving to a personal-best 18.11 meters (59 feet, 5 inches) to finish sixth, earning second-team All-ACC honors and moving to No. 8 all-time at Virginia Tech.
Lukas Baroke won the hammer throw with a mark of 64.13 meters (210 feet, 4 inches) in his first meet of the season.
Mariana Pestana claimed the hammer throw title with a mark of 66.01 meters (216 feet, 7 inches) in her season debut.
Alex Hoffman finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 56.25 meters (184 feet, 6 inches).
