No. 14 Tech sweeps midweek doubleheader at Longwood

Tech returns to Blacksburg for its home opener against NC State

FARMVILLE, Va. – No. 12/14 Virginia Tech (25-4) swept its midweek doubleheader against Longwood on Wednesday at Bank of the James Stadium. Tech won the first game, 12-0 (5) and the second game, 7-1.

How It Happened: Game One • Virginia Tech 12, Longwood 0 (5 inn.)
Virginia Tech scored first in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Rachel Castine delivered a sacrifice fly to score Nora Abromavage and make it a 1-0 game.

The Hokies offense came to life with a five-run top of the fourth. With the bases loaded off three walks, Castine stepped up once again and drilled a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0. Tech continued its big inning after Castine’s hit. Michelle Chatfield singled through the left side to load the bases once more, which was followed up by a Kylie Aldridge single and a Lancer error in the outfield to clear the bases and make it a 6-0 contest.

Tech followed up its massive fourth inning with a six-run inning in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff double by Addison Foster, Tech capitalized on a Lancer error to have Castine reach second and score Foster.

Lily Pallante recorded her first collegiate hit, which was followed up by Michelle Chatfield hitting into a fielder’s choice to third. Standing on third, Castine avoided the tag during a rundown and scored safely.

Jordan Bishop delivered a clutch pinch-hit appearance and drove a two-RBI single through the left side. After Abromavage reached on an error, MJ Abernathy recorded her second career hit – an RBI single to left field – to make it a 12-0 advantage.

Avery Layton was stellar for the Hokies in the circle, giving up just one hit over 4.0 innings pitched. Addyson Fisher pitched the last inning in relief, retiring all three batters to secure the 12-0 win.

How It Happened: Game Two • Virginia Tech 7, Longwood 1
Longwood struck first in the bottom of the third inning off an RBI fielder’s choice, but Tech punched back in the top of the fourth. After a standup triple by Jordan Lynch, Addison Foster delivered the sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Lynch and tie the game up.

With runners on first and second to start the top of the fifth, Zoe Yaeger hit her seventh home run of the season – a three-run shot to left center – to extend the lead to 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, Foster joined in on the fun and hit a leadoff solo homer to left center to give the Hokies a 5-1 lead.

After Nora Abromavage singled through the left side in the top of the seventh, Jordan Lynch blasted her eighth home run of the season to extend the lead to 7-1.

Coming in with the game tied 1-1, Bree Carrico entered the game in the bottom of the fourth and shined for the Hokies in the circle. She tallied 10 strikeouts – a new career high – in just 4.0 innings pitched.
