DURHAM, N.C. – No. 11 Virginia Tech (22-4) fell to the No. 25 Duke Blue Devils (18-9), 5-2, in the second game of the series.
How It Happened
Duke jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead as the Blue Devils tallied four hits and capitalized on two Virginia Tech walks in the bottom of the first.
The Hokies punched back right away in the top of the second. With two infield singles and a Duke error, Haley Luginbill stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter with the bases loaded. Luginbill drilled a single up the middle to score two Hokie runs and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Bree Carrico entered the game in the top of the second and pitched two scoreless innings for the Hokies. Tech threatened once again in the top of the fourth with the bases loaded but were unable to bring anyone home.
Duke added one more run in the bottom of the fourth off a Blue Devil RBI single.
The Hokies rallied one more time in the top of the seventh and saw the bases loaded — but were unable to bring any more runs in.
