AUBURN, Ala. – No. 11/12 Virginia Tech (15-2) continued its successful weekend at the Jane B. Memorial Invitational with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Troy and a 6-2 win over Auburn on Saturday.
Tech’s pitchers were stellar in the circle. Combined over both games, Addyson Fisher, Avery Layton and Emma Mazzarone only allowed five hits.
Game One • Virginia Tech 8, Troy 0 (5 inn.)
Michelle Chatfield got the scoring started for the Hokies, reaching home on a wild pitch in the top of the first. After Zoe Yaeger doubled to right center, Jordan Lynch hit her second home run of the weekend to give the Hokies a 3-0 lead.
Tech added another run in the top of the third off a sacrifice fly by Kylie Aldridge. In the top of the fourth, Chatfield capitalized on an Annika Rohs walk and blasted a two-run home run to center to extend the lead to 6-0.
With runners on second and third in the top of the fifth, Gaby Mizelle drilled a single through the right side to score two more runs to make it an 8-0 Hokie lead.
Avery Layton pitched 4.1 innings and only allowed one hit with five strikeouts. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Addyson Fisher came in and got the final two outs to secure the win.
Game Two • Virginia Tech 6, Auburn 2
Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Addison Foster delivered a two-RBI single to left field to give Tech the early advantage.
No one scored again until the top of the fourth when Rachel Castine blasted her third home run of the season – a two-run shot – over the left field wall to give Tech a 4-0 lead.
An RBI triple by Jordan Lynch and an RBI double by Addison Foster quickly gave the Hokies a 6-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Auburn threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but only scored two runs to cut the deficit to four.
Emma Mazzarone went the distance, only allowing three hits with seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings pitched.
