Tech’s bats came alive, combining for 19 runs over two games

COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 19/21 Virginia Tech capped off a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Gamecock Invitational with wins over Binghamton and No. 12/14 South Carolina on Saturday.

Trailing in each game, the Hokies fought their way back to earn two wins on the day and start the season 5-0.

Game One • Virginia Tech 11, Binghamton 3
Binghamton struck first with a big three-run top of the third inning, but the Hokies’ bats came alive in response. 

With Jordan Lynch on second, Nora Abromavage blasted a home run down the left field line to cut the Binghamton lead to 3-2. An RBI single by Addison Foster tied the game, and Zoe Yaeger drove in another run to give Tech the 4-3 lead. 

Tech added two more runs in the fifth which began with Annika Rohs driving in a run off a single to left field. Foster followed Rohs up with her second RBI single of the day to extend the lead to 6-3. 

The Hokies exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth to run-rule the Bearcats. With the bases loaded, Abromavage hit her second home run of the day to make it a 10-3 lead. 

In her first Hokie at bat, transfer Haley Luginbill launched a solo shot home run to left field to secure the run-rule win. 

Game Two • Virginia Tech 8, South Carolina 5
South Carolina jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Tech responded immediately. Zoe Yaeger and Michelle Chatfield hit back-to-back home runs to cut the lead to 4-3. 

With runners on second and third, Emma Mazzarone drilled a single to left field for two RBI and the Hokie lead. Through three innings, Tech led 5-4.

In the top of the fifth, Addison Foster hit a full-count two-out single to left field to bring in two more runs and extend the Hokie lead to 7-4.

Despite South Carolina tacking on another run in the bottom of the sixth, Tech held strong and added a run of their own off an Annika Rohs RBI double. 

Bree Carrico came in the sixth inning and delivered a closer masterclass as she struck out three straight South Carolina batters to end the game.
