BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech earned a victory, 17-13, over Elon in the first clash on Thompson Field this season. The result moves the Hokies to 4-2 on the season.
The Hokies struggled in the opening frame, with Elon applying double-team pressure fresh out of the gates. Reese Wallich put Tech on the board four and a half minutes into play. The next goal did not come until just over four minutes remained in the first quarter.
Going into the second quarter, the Phoenix extended their lead to 7-3. Mia Pozzi won the following draw control, sparking an 8-0 scoring run for the Hokies. Tech allowed just three Elon shots in the frame. Pozzi recorded five of her six assists, a career high, in the first half.
In the second half, scoring went back and forth between the squads. Virginia Tech held a narrow 13-11 lead entering the fourth quarter after back-to-back Elon goals. Four additional goals in the final frame, including Lauren Render’s 100th career goal, helped the Hokies hold off Elon and remain undefeated at home this season.
Mia Pozzi finished with four goals and six assists. Wallich and Maggie Falangan each recorded hat tricks.
