ATHENS, Ga. – No. 17/20 Virginia Tech took down No. 12/16 Georgia, 9-3, on Saturday night at Jack Turner Softball Stadium.
Emma Mazzarone pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts, and Nora Abromavage hit her fourth home run of the season.
How It Happened
Tech wasted no time getting on the board as Nora Abromavage launched a two-run shot to left center in the top of the first inning. Despite the Bulldogs tying the contest in the bottom of the first, the Hokies punched right back.
In the top of the second, the Hokies capitalized on a Bulldog error and saw Gaby Mizelle cross home plate. With Michelle Chatfield on second, Kylie Aldridge drilled a double to left center to score Chatfield and make it a 4-2 game.
A sacrifice fly from Mizelle gave Tech a 5-2 lead through three innings.
A huge four-run top of the fourth propelled Tech to a seven-run lead. Aldridge and Abromavage delivered RBI singles and Lyla Blackwell scored on a Georgia wild pitch. Tech capped off the big inning with a sacrifice fly from Addison Foster.
Georgia hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 9-3 ball game, but Emma Mazzarone secured the win with two strikeouts and a line drive catch to end the game.
Mazzarone was spectacular in the circle as she struck out nine batters and only allowed four hits.
