BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech (21-8, 11-6 ACC) battled back from a first half deficit to defeat Georgia Tech (12-16, 7-9 ACC), 62-51, Sunday afternoon.
The Hokies closed out their home schedule with a 14-4 record, their most home wins since the 2023-24 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech were in a battle to start the game until the Yellow Jackets utilized the free throw line to move ahead, 11-6, with 6:52 remaining. The Hokies responded with transition baskets, the last from Samyha Suffren (4:34) to close to 11-10. Carleigh Wenzel hit a timely triple with 24 seconds left in the quarter as Tech trailed, 19-15.
The Hokies kept themselves in the fight, answering every call from Georgia Tech. Mel Daley was key in midway of the period, scoring on a pull-up jump shot at 7:45 to keep Tech within two points, 25-23. After the Yellow Jackets pulled away by six, 32-26 at 3:33, Virginia Tech scored five straight to finish the half down narrowly, 32-31.
Tech felt the force of Georgia Tech to start the second half, but Anyia Trent (7:48) converted inside to keep the game within one, 34-33. Suffren knocked down four straight free throws to give the Hokies the lead, 39-38, with 3:33 left in the frame. A pull-up jumper from Wenzel at the buzzer sent Tech into the fourth quarter with a 43-40 advantage.
Virginia Tech continued their run with a 12-0 spurt to start the final quarter to pull ahead by 15, 55-40. During the stretch, Mackenzie Nelson (8:18) and Wenzel (5:56) knocked down three-pointers. The Yellow Jackets went off for seven unanswered points, but the Hokies closed it out at the free throw line to secure the 62-51 win.

- Wenzel knocked down two three-pointers in the contest, her last helped her eclipse the 1,000-point career scoring milestone
- Forward Carys Baker rounded out the double figure scoring for Tech with 10 points
- Baker matched her career-best four blocks to compliment eight rebounds and two steals
- Freshman Aniya Trent pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in 11 minutes
- Guard Mackenzie Nelson finished with seven points, six assists, and career-high four steals
- Virginia Tech improves to 15-3 when Nelson dishes five or more assists in a contest
