Tech falls to Virginia in first conference match

The Hokies took down the No. 4-ranked doubles pairing in the country on Court 1.

BLACKSBURG – The Hokies fall 7-0 in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash to rivals No. 16 Virginia on Wednesday afternoon. 

The bright spot for the Hokies came in doubles as Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu defeated the No. 4-ranked doubles partnership in the nation, Melodie Collard and Vivian Yang, 6-4. This marked the duo's first-ranked win this season.  

The other two doubles teams for Tech fell to the Cavaliers, giving Virginia the doubles point to go up 1-0. 

The Cavaliers continued their momentum into singles, taking all six courts in straight sets. 

The win/loss gives the Cavaliers one point in the Commonwealth Clash, presented by Smithfield. The score for the Commonwealth Clash currently is 6.5-2.5 in favor of Virginia. For more information, visit hokiesports.com/commonwealth-clash.
