BLACKSBURG - A five-goal fourth quarter propelled the Hokies to an 11-4 victory over VCU on Tuesday.
Sophomore midfielder Sarah Murrell set the tone early for the Hokies, finding Cassandra Montgomery for a quick behind-the-back dish into the goal. Lauren Render boosted the squad’s lead to 2-0 less than five minutes into the quarter.
The Hokies’ defense stifled the Rams until 35 seconds remained in the first frame, and they continued to apply pressure throughout the first half. The squad added three goals in the second frame, two assisted by attacker Sophia Trahan, to control the game going into the break.
The start of the second half was characterized by stifling defense on both ends, which was backed up by both goalies. Colleen Thieke’s second goal of the game at the beginning of the fourth ignited a fire under the Hokie squad, sparking a 5-1 scoring run to close out the game, 11-4.
Mia Pozzi and Montgomery followed Thieke’s lead, with two goals each. Trahan finished with one goal and three assists, a season high.
