Tech wins close match over Navy

Two freshmen helped the team secure the win

BLACKSBURG – Tech wins a 4-3 back-and-forth battle with Navy on Feb. 14 at home, thanks to two big wins from freshmen. 

The Hokies opened the match with a 6-1 win in doubles from Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu. Tech fell on the other two courts to give Navy the doubles point. 

Despite being down 1-0 after doubles, the Hokies continued to show lots of fight. Uslu started the team off with a sweep over Nicole Fu, 6-1, 6-2.

Gamretkaia picked up the second point for Tech, tying the match at 2-2, as she defeated Grace Li, 6-1, 6-4. 

The match came down to freshmen Alston Myatt and Elizaveta Castillo as the Hokies were down 3-2. Myatt was successful in finding a sweep over Jina Cha, 6-4, 7-5, while Castillo grinded out a three-set win over Anna Jordaan, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.
