Tech drops close match to Old Dominion

Patrik Jurina and Eyal Shumilov won both their singles and doubles matches.

NORFOLK, Va. – The Hokies dropped close contest to Old Dominion Friday night by a score of 4-3.

Tech got off to a quick start, grabbing the doubles point. Ilyas Fahim and Patrik Jurina jumped to a 6-2 win to open the match. Court No. 1 duo Blake Hilsen and Eyal Shumilov secured the Hokies’ early lead with a 7-5 victory. 

Adding to Tech’s advantage, Shumilov claimed his second victory of the evening, winning his singles match 6-3, 6-3. 

Jurina also had success in addition to his doubles win, defeating his opponent 6-2, 7-5, giving the Hokies a 3-1 edge. 

Old Dominion climbed back to even the score at three, leaving the match tied down to its final court. Freshman Drew Fishback sent his match to three sets, grabbing the second set 6-3. After a strong fight, he ultimately dropped his match 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.

UP NEXT: The Hokies head back home to host Bellarmine Sunday, Feb. 15 at 9:30 a.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
