Hokies wrap up play at J.T. Poston Invitational

Tech posts eighth-place finish

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s golf team wrapped up another tournament to start the week at the J.T. Poston invitational. Three-day play concluded on Tuesday at Waynesville Inn and Golf Club (par 70, 6,720 yards). 

The Hokies carded an 844 (277-285-282), finishing in eighth place. Tech was led by Gareth Steyn (70-70-69) and Ashton Harper’s (68-71-70) 244 over the three-day event, tying for 14th 

Southern Mississippi topped the leaderboard with an 827 (275-276-276). Matthew Javier led the Golden Eagles, tying for fourth with a 5-under tournament at 205. 

Western Carolina’s Tyler Jones took home medalist honors, carding a 10-under score of 200, three shots ahead of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s Jorge Martin Sampedro at 7-under 203. 

The Hokies tee it off again in a couple of weeks, where they will compete in the Cullan Brown Collegiate. The Kentucky Wildcats will host the 54-hole event beginning October 6.
