Tech to start ACC play against Virginia in sold out Cassell Coliseum

BLACKSBURG – As the Virginia Tech men’s basketball program prepares to begin ACC play on Wednesday, December 31 against rival No. 21 Virginia in a contest set to tip at 2 p.m. on ACC Network, we thought Hokie fans would want to learn more about the series with the program's biggest rival.

Tech is 11-2 on the season after completing the non-conference slate with a thrilling 82-81 victory over Elon last Saturday. The Hokies erased a 19-point first half deficit as Amani Hansberry produced a 20-point, 14-rebound double-double and freshman Christian Gurdak went for a career-best 17 points in his first career start.

In 11 games at the helm against the Cavaliers, Mike Young has earned five victories, including an upset of the No. 8 Hoos in Blacksburg in 2021 and the No. 6 Cavaliers in Cassell in 2023. Below is a chart of how the Hokies have fared in Young's tenure against Virginia.

Last season featured two tight games, with margins of just one and three points, the road team emerging victorious in both. Jaden Schutt led the Hokies to victory in Charlottesville  with a team-high 18 points that included four 3-pointers. Tobi Lawal was Tech's other athlete in double figures with a 17-point, five-rebound performance.
