Hokies fall in three to No. 10 Mustangs

DALLAS — The Virginia Tech volleyball team (10-15, 2-12 ACC) fell in straight sets to No. 10 SMU (19-5, 11-3 ACC) on Friday night, as the Mustangs won 25-16, 25-13 and 25-14.

SMU opened the first set with an early 3-0 lead, and although Virginia Tech battled to keep the pressure on, the Hokies called a timeout trailing 18-9. Despite their efforts, the Mustangs took the first set 25-16. Payton Woods and Brianna Holladay each led with three kills.

In the second set, the Hokies kept things close early at 4-5, but SMU responded with a 10-0 run to pull ahead 15-4. Reese Hazelton and Isabella Mishler each recorded kills and blocks, while Woods added more offense, but the Mustangs claimed the set 25-13.

Virginia Tech continued to fight in the third set, but SMU maintained control to close out the match 25-14. Woods and Elizabeth Aylward led the Hokies with three kills apiece.

Virginia Tech will travel to Tobacco Road next week for two more road matches, facing Duke on Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. ET, followed by No. 15 North Carolina on Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. ET. Both matches will stream on ACCNX.
