PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Virginia Tech couldn’t overcome No. 3 Pittsburgh on Friday night, falling in straight sets (25-13, 25-12, 25-17) at Fitzgerald Field House. The Hokies now sit at 10-14 overall and 2-11 in ACC play.
The Hokies opened the first set strong, jumping out to a 4-2 lead and forcing an early Pitt timeout at 8-7. Despite solid efforts from Reese Hazelton, who tallied two kills, and Payton Woods, who added four, the Panthers rallied to take the opening frame 25-13.
Pitt carried its momentum into the second set, storming ahead 9-2 and prompting a Hokie timeout. Isabella Mishler and Elizabeth Aylward each tallied three kills for Virginia Tech, with Mishler leading the way with a .400 hitting percentage. However, the Panthers continued to control the tempo, extending their lead to 18-7 before closing out the set, 25-12.
Virginia Tech responded with its best defensive performance of the night in the third set, leading in blocks 3-0. Hazelton paced the Hokies with four kills, a .547 hitting percentage, and one service ace, helping Tech battle to an early 4-4 tie. Pitt’s defense, however, held firm to secure the final set 25-17 and complete the sweep.
