This weekend’s matchup is the 42nd entry into the storied Hokies-Hurricanes rivalry.

When Virginia Tech and Miami take Worsham Field on Saturday afternoon, the two teams will engage in their 42nd all-time meeting since first facing off in 1953. While the Hurricanes hold the lead in head-to-head matchups 26-15, the Hokies have found success when playing in Blacksburg, defeating Miami in eight different home contests since 1995.

In more recent years, competition between Virginia Tech and Miami has earned a thrilling reputation. Four of the last five matchups have been decided by less than seven points, dictating that it often takes all four quarters for a winner to be crowned on gameday.

The Virginia Tech offense faces a highly touted defense for the second week in a row.

Saturday’s contest against Miami will give the Virginia Tech offense an opportunity to perform against one of the ACC’s highest rated defenses. The Hurricanes, who are limiting their opponents to a conference-best 14.3 points per game in 2025, are led by first-year defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman.

Hetherman’s defensive unit has found success largely in part from those in the trenches. The defensive line, which is led by Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr., has imposed its will on opposing offenses to the tune of 25 sacks for a conference fourth-best 195 yards. The line has also been a key contributor to Miami’s 81.8 rush yards allowed per game, a total that sits atop the ACC.

Fans should keep their eyes peeled to see how the Virginia Tech offense can respond to the top-ranked Miami defense this Saturday. Against Florida State’s defense which ranked third in the ACC in the Hokies’ latest contest, running back Marcellous Hawkins Jr. led the charge behind 101 yards on 12 carries (8.4 yards per carry).

Players to Know:

Defensive Lineman Kody Huisman
In his first season wearing maroon and orange, senior defensive lineman Kody Huisman has made his presence known among the Lunch Pail Defense on gamedays. Towering over opponents at 6-foot-4, 297 pounds, the North Dakota State transfer has logged 29 tackles through 10 appearances (4 starts) in 2025. His 82.2 overall defense grade per Pro Football Focus (PFF) is first among all members of the Tech defense this season.

Running Back Jeffrey Overton Jr.
Standing at 5-foot-10, 178 pounds, freshman running back Jeffrey Overton has provided the Hokies with a spark in moments over the last two games. His 36-yard catch and run in the second quarter of last week’s contest against Florida State demonstrated Overton’s ability to use his speed and agility in the open field, setting the Hokies up before Drones’s rushing touchdown. Between a pair of appearances this season, Overton has 24 rush yards on seven attempts and 36 receiving yards.
