BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech earned their fourth non-conference victory of the season, 3-0 versus Longwood, behind a stellar freshman performance from Dagur Traustason on a rainy Tuesday evening.
Traustason now leads all Hokies with four goals scored this season with a 100 percent accuracy (6-6) on shots on frame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Virginia Tech went on the attack as soon as the ball was kicked off, threatening with three shots on goal within the first ten minutes. The Hokies opened the scoring at the 13th minute after Alex Perez controlled the defensive punch out from Longwood’s goalkeeper, lofting the ball to the left side of the six-yard box for the head of Dagur Traustason.
The freshman’s header earned him his first career brace kudos to Tech’s corner kick set piece. Ian Marcano was tasked with getting the ball in play at the minute, Amir Ariely made first contact on a header flying to the goal, and Traustason put the finishing touch to get the ball into the goal at the 30th minute. The Hokies' defense stood their line in the first 45, only facing one shot while rattling off nine of their own.
Longwood picked up momentum out of the break, seeing all four of their second half shots either saved or blocked. Keeper Sam Joseph was tested at the 50th minute when a Lancer ripped a bending shot headed to the right post from outside the 18-yard box, forcing him to lay out to get a hand on it to force the momentum out of play.
The Hokies kept forcing their hand with six shots in the first ten minutes of the second half. Momentum lulled for Virginia Tech until the 72nd minute where Perez slotted the ball through the defense to the tracking Traustason who placed the ball on his right foot and shot to the left side of the keeper to net his hat-trick.
