Things to Know:
The Hokies have achieved success when facing Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
Saturday’s contest marks the 21st all-time matchup between the Hokies and the Yellow Jackets. The two teams first started competing in 1990, making this season’s game the 35th anniversary of the first contest shared by the squads.
Of the 10 games the Hokies have played in Atlanta, Virginia Tech has won seven of them, dating back to the first series road victory on Oct. 28, 2004. In the contest just over two decades ago, a 25-point fourth quarter from the No. 22 Hokies would prove to be the determining factor in what was a 34-20 Virginia Tech win.
In more recent contests against Georgia Tech, the Hokies have been able to find ways to succeed on both ends of the field. In Blacksburg last fall, the Hokies limited the Yellow Jackets’ rushing attack to less than 100 yards while running back Bhayshul Tuten had an 80-yard day of his own. The 21-6 win was capitalized by a strong performance from tight end Benji Gosnell, whose 59 receiving yards on five catches led the offense.
Georgia Tech has struggled after an open week.
The Hokies have a unique opportunity to capitalize against the Yellow Jackets on Saturday. Georgia Tech’s first breather from five straight contests occurred this past weekend, while the Hokies find their first of two open weeks to come after the contest in Atlanta.
Historically, the Yellow Jackets have found themselves on the losing side of games played after an open week. Georgia Tech has lost four of the last six games coming out of a rest period, the team dropping games against Boston College, Temple and twice against Virginia in 2021 and 2022.
Players to Know:
Linebacker Kaleb Spencer
Kaleb Spencer has served as a force for the Hokies in what is now his second season in maroon and orange. The 6-foot-2, 221-pound junior leads the team in tackles (30) through six contests, 17 of which have come in the last two games. His 81.2 run defense grade on Pro Football Focus (PFF) is third among defensive Hokies alongside a seventh-ranked pass rush grade of 71.7.
Wide Receiver Takye Heath
Hailing from Highland Springs, Va., redshirt sophomore wideout Takye Heath has been a steady contributor in the pass game this fall. His presence was felt most in Blacksburg this past weekend, as the receiver’s slant route converted into six points with just under 10 minutes left in the second quarter. Heath has seven receptions for 35 yards through three games this season.
