Storylines to Watch:
The Hokies have historically performed well when playing the Cardinals in Lane Stadium.
This weekend’s matchup will be the tenth meeting between the Hokies and the Cardinals. Virginia Tech is 6-3 all-time in head-to-head matchups since the two teams began competing in September 1997.
In the three games Tech and Louisville have shared at Lane Stadium, the Hokies have emerged victorious in each contest. The Hokies rode a three-touchdown performance from Virginia Tech Hall of Fame quarterback Will Furrer for a 41-13 win in the most recent game in the series playing in Blacksburg in 1991.
Now over thirty years and plenty of history later, the Hokies will look to continue their good fortune against a Cardinals team that has averaged 24 points on the road in 2025. Both teams enter the contest after logging wins in their most recent games, as the Cardinals' offensive output put Boston College away 38-24 while the Hokies outlasted Cal 42-34 in double overtime.
The two squads meet Saturday after their running backs wowed a weekend ago.
One of the Hokies’ key contributors in the exhilarating Friday night victory was transfer running back Marcellous Hawkins. The redshirt junior exploded for a season-high 167 yards against the Golden Bears, doing so on 21 carries (8.0 yards per carry) throughout the chilly Blacksburg evening. Hokie fans should keep their eyes peeled to see how Hawkins’ offensive contributions impact a Cardinals run defense that’s allowing 105.3 yards per game to opposing rushers this fall.
Opposite Hawkins is starting Louisville running back Isaac Brown, who recorded 205 yards last Saturday against the Boston College Eagles. Last week’s performance was the fourth time in seven games that the sophomore has eclipsed 100 yards on the ground (Eastern Kentucky, James Madison, Miami) and the fourth straight game in which Brown had 10 or more carries.
Players to Know:
Wide Receiver Donovan Greene
A graduate transfer, wideout Donovan Greene has brought a veteran presence and big-play ability to the Hokies this fall. The 6-foot-2, 196-pound receiver has made plays of 20 or more yards in four of eight contests in 2025, including a 37-yard catch from quarterback Kyron Drones against South Carolina in the season opener. Greene has 274 receiving yards on 16 catches (17.1 yards per catch) alongside a pair of touchdowns.
Cornerback Isaiah Brown-Murray
Hailing from Charlotte, N.C., transfer cornerback Isaiah-Brown Murray has made an indelible mark on the Lunch Pail Defense this season. The redshirt junior is currently tied for second in pass deflections (3) through seven games and is one of three Hokies to intercept a pass this season. Standing at 5-foot-9, 192 pounds, Brown-Murray has logged four solo tackles in three straight contests and will look to continue the streak against the Cardinals on Saturday.
