BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech grounded Winthrop in a 2–0 victory on Wednesday night at Thompson Field.
The Hokies closed out non-conference play with an unblemished 5-0-2 record. All five wins were shutouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hokies controlled the match from start to finish, holding a 28–4 advantage in shots, starting with Declan Quill’s half volley in the fourth minute. Virginia Tech finally broke through in the 34th minute when Ian Marcano’s corner kick found Andy Sullins, who headed in his second goal of the season, just 47 seconds after entering the match to give the Hokies a 1–0 lead heading into halftime.
Six minutes into the second half, Tech doubled its lead when Quill delivered a well-timed pass that set up Dagur Traustason (51') to one-time the ball in with his left foot from the top of the goal area. The score marked Traustason’s seventh goal of the season and Quill’s second assist.
The Hokies, looking to add onto their advantage, unloaded 15 second half shots while limiting Winthrop to one chance in the 85th minute to hold on for the 2-0 victory.
