BLACKSBURG – Tech fell in a close match to No. 9 Duke 3-2 on Saturday at Thompson Field.

Natalie Mitchell and Anna Weir both got on the scoresheet in the second half.

How It Happened
The first half ended 0-0, but the Hokies created multiple chances on net with nine shots. Tech’s best chance of the first half came in the opening minutes as Anna Weir had consecutive 1-on-1 chances in front of goal, but was unable to place it past the Duke defense. Lauren Hargrove also made four saves to keep the score level, with help from Kylie Marschall for the fifth save of the first half.

Duke opened the scoring in the 54th minute as Hargrove saved the first shot attempt, but the rebound fell at the feet of a Blue Devil to put away. The second goal came soon after, with an over-the-top long ball play that gave Duke a 1-on-1 with Hargrove. The third and eventually game-winning goal came through a cross into the box and a header past Hargrove.

Natalie Mitchell found Tech’s first goal of the night as Samantha DeGuzman picked the ball off the Duke defender. DeGuzman played Mitchell forward, who struck from outside the 18-yard box in the 79th minute.

With three minutes left on the clock, Weir found her sixth of the season with a header at the near post. Taylor Price started the drive forward, playing Hannah Pachan out on the left side. Pachan crossed the ball back to Price, who headed it to Weir for the finish.

Despite Tech’s late surge in the second half, the Hokies were unable to tie the game in the final minutes.
