BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech secured a 2-0 victory over Louisville behind a dominant second-half performance and brace from freshman Dagur Traustason.

Traustason has scored each of the Hokies’ last five goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Virginia Tech threatened early as forward Dagur Traustason created a chance from the left wing in the sixth minute, but his effort just barely missed wide. After the Hokies held strong defensively, Louisville found two straight opportunities in the 33rd and 34th minutes but Tech was able to deny both chances.

Tech earned seven first half corner kicks, including four in the final 10 minutes as they pressed to break the deadlock, but couldn’t convert as they half ended a scoreless, 0-0.

The Hokies maintained their attacking momentum during the second half, outshooting the Cardinals 12-3. Their persistence paid off in the 66th minute when Ian Marcano delivered a cross from the top of the penalty box to Dagur Traustason, who headed it home to give Virginia Tech a 1-0 lead. Marcano nearly doubled the lead in the 71st minute, but his shot was saved.

Louisville started to creep into their offensive end, generating dangerous chances to break their scoreless streak, but both of their attempts were denied by Tech’s defense. Then, in the 90th minute, Declan Quill sent a well-timed lateral pass to Traustason, who calmly tapped it in from the penalty area to secure his first career brace and earn Virginia Tech a 2-0 win.
