Tech turns in opening-round 278, ties for 12th

LOUDON, Tenn. – The Virginia Tech men's golf team began its 2025-26 campaign this weekend at the Visit Knoxville Collegiate. The three-day event concluded Sunday at Tennessee National Golf Club (par 70, 7,201 yards).
Led by Benjamin Baker, Gareth Steyn and Rahul Rajendran, the Hokies carded an 866 (278-290-298) to tie Augusta for 12th place. The Tech trio tied for 43rd at 7-over 217.
Tennessee dominated the 16-team field to capture the team title with a score of 19-under 821 (265-275-281), seven strokes ahead of second-place Ole Miss and 13 strokes ahead of third-place LSU.
Lance Simpson led the way for the Volunteers, finishing fourth overall in the tournament with a 5-under 205. Charlotte's Chase Cline and Tennessee's Reed Lotter, playing as an individual, tied for medalist honors at 7-under 203.
The Hokies won't wait long to tee it up again as they head to the JT Poston Invitational, Sept. 14-16. The 54-hole tournament will be hosted by Western Carolina at Waynesville Inn and Golf Club in Waynesville, N.C.
