Things to Know:
Philip Montgomery steps into the interim head coach role with experience.
Virginia Tech’s Philip Montgomery is now at the helm of the Hokies football program. The Eastland, Texas native is now in his 32nd year as a coach, spanning a career that includes positions at Houston, Baylor, and Auburn University.
Perhaps the most important stop in Montgomery’s coaching career was at Tulsa University, where he served as head coach from 2015-22. His second year in 2016 was his most successful, a season that saw his Golden Hurricane team achieve nine regular season wins and a 55-10 thumping of Central Michigan in the Miami Beach Bowl. The 2016 squad scored an average of 42.4 points per game and put up 50 or more points on four of thirteen opponents.
Also interesting to note: During his time at Baylor (2008-14), Montgomery oversaw the development of the offense in a variety of roles. As the co-offensive coordinator in 2011, the coaching veteran mentored then-Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, who would win the Heisman behind 3,998 passing yards and 36 passing touchdowns. Montgomery’s offensive mind stands to serve as an advantage against a Terriers defense that has already allowed 381 yards per game in 2025.
There’s a heavy amount of turnover on the Terriers.
Entering the 2025 season, the Hokies were able to secure plenty of returning student-athletes who saw action in 2024. Candidates like wide receiver Ayden Greene, linebacker Jaden Keller, and defensive lineman Kelvin Gilliam Jr. all committed to staying in Blacksburg, committed to refining their craft before the 2025 campaign kicked off in August.
The same cannot be said about Wofford. The Terriers return just ten starters from their 2024 roster, the breakdown being four offensive players, four defensive players, and two specialists. Most notable of the departures from the FCS school is Isaiah Wadsworth, a three-star cornerback who logged a team-high eight pass breakups over 12 games in 2024 (11 starts).
Players to Watch:
Running Back Terion Stewart
A transfer student from Memphis, Tennessee, graduate student Terion Stewart has been a steady source of offensive momentum for the Hokies this fall. Against Old Dominion this past Saturday, the former Bowling Green back rushed eight times for 55 yards, including a 31-yard dash in the first quarter. Given Wofford’s inability to squander opposing run games this fall – the team currently allows 123.3 rush yards a game – Stewart has a chance to take advantage.
Linebacker Ben Bell
Also joining the Hokies from the transfer portal this season is defensive lineman Ben Bell. A fifth-year student from Cedar Park, Texas, Bell has been making a name for himself on the defensive side of the ball through three games, including a four-tackle performance against Vanderbilt on Sept. 6. In the matchup against the Monarchs, the former Texas State defensive end recovered a fumble early in the first quarter, giving the Hokies field position within Old Dominion territory.
