BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated Marshall 3-1 Thursday night in the opening match of the Hokie Invitational at Carillon Clinic Court at Cassell Coliseum. With the win, Tech stands at 6-1 on the season ahead of a two-match day Friday.
For the second consecutive match there were three Hokies who registered 10 or more kills with senior Sarah Malinowski leading the way with 14, a season high. She was joined in double figures by Payton Woods (12) and Reese Hazelton (11).
The Hokies led the entire way throughout the first set until the Herd took a 27-26 lead that they were able to capitalize on to secure the first set.
From there, the Hokies settled in and won the second set 25-15 and third set 25-11.
In the fourth, the Herd started on the front foot, but a back-and-forth affair would go the way of the home squad, winning the 2025 debut at Cassell.
Match Notes
•It was the seventh time in her career that Malinowski registered 10 or more kills.
•Hazelton recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, her second consecutive match recording one.
•Erica Dellesky had 25 assists, a career best.
