Things to Know:
Another SEC opponent awaits
After opening the season against South Carolina in the Aflac Kickoff last week, the Hokies are set to go toe to toe with another Southeastern Conference foe, this time the 1-0 Vanderbilt Commodores. The 'Dores cruised to a 45-3 victory over Charleston Southern this past Saturday. The Hokies, who are eagerly awaiting a chance to play in front of Hokie Nation at Lane Stadium, are looking for a bounce back performance after falling short in Atlanta. Last season, Tech opened the season at Vanderbilt and lost a thrilling game 34-27 on overtime. Saturday night will provide an opportunity to flip the script and get into the win column for the first time in 2025.
You have to go back to 2016 for the last time that the Hokies have played two SEC opponents in the same season. That year they took on Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway in September and then closed the season with an epic comeback victory in the Belk Bowl against Arkansas.
Keep the streak alive
Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry is 3-0 in the initial home game of the season at Lane Stadium Worhsam Field. Dating back to 2016, nine seasons ago, the Hokies have won each first home game of the season including a shutout of Delaware in 2017 and three ACC bouts (NC State in 2020, North Carolina in 2021, Boston College 2022).
Players to Watch:
Placekicker John Love
Love, a redshirt junior booted another field goal of 50-plus yards Sunday against South Carolina, this time from 56 yard. Ever reliable, he went 3-for-3 against the Gamecocks, also connecting from 29 and 39 yards. The Spartanburg, S.C. native owns a percentage north of 88% throughout his career and has converted all of his PAT attempts.
Wide Receiver Donavon Greene
A transfer from Wake Forest who suited up in maroon and orange for the first time in Atlanta last week, Greene was an impact player catching three passes for 94 yards. In fact, each of his receptions was a "big play" going from 25 or more yards and advancing the chains. For the Hokies to have success Greene and his running mates will need to continue to find openings in the secondary to exploit to keep the offense on rhythm.
