Six Hokies named to prestigious VaSID Academic All-State Team

Tech student-athletes lauded for academic excellence

BLACKSBURG – Six Virginia Tech student-athletes have been selected to the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team, as announced by the organization Tuesday.

Representing six different Hokie programs, the honorees were recognized for their academic excellence and impact within their respective sports. The VaSID Academic All-State Team honors student-athletes from across the Commonwealth who have excelled both in competition and in the classroom.

Virginia Tech’s selections include Sam Tackett (baseball), Lauren Hargrove (women’s soccer), Carys Baker (women’s basketball), Sam Latona (wrestling), Kelvin Gilliam Jr. (football) and Cori McMillan (softball).

To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must be sophomores or higher and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Thirty-three colleges and universities across Virginia nominated six student-athletes to form the 198-member all-state team.

Sam Latona, Gr., Alabaster, Ala. – Agricultural and Life Sciences (Wrestling)
Kelvin Gilliam Jr., R-Sr., Richmond, Va. – Sociology (Football)
Cori McMillan, Sr., Greensboro, N.C. – Exercise and Health Sciences (Softball)
