by Bailey Angle

Meet Grant Bommer, a 2021 and 2022 grad who earned his Bachelor of Science in Finance and Management and his MBA from Virginia Tech. Inspired by his father, a businessman and his earliest supporter, Grant’s interest in finance took root early. It was during his very first Intro to Finance class in college that he realized he had found his passion. Today, Grant serves as a Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) Lead at Leidos in Reston, VA. Outside of work, he enjoys honing his leadership skills, baking fresh bread, and spending quality time with family and friends.

Q: Why do you think it is important to give back to Virginia Tech Athletics?

GB: In addition to giving to Campus Beautification and Academic Departments, I give back to the HokieBird, VT Football, and VT Volleyball—the three athletics teams that made the biggest impact on me while I was at Virginia Tech. Anytime I see the HokieBird, I have the same excited grin as I did when I was five.VT Football gave me some of my most memorable days and lifelong friends.VT Volleyball was special for me as well.Greg Klatt and I made shirts that said “Big Hokie Energy” and started wearing them to games. Our friends would join- we made more shirts. More friends would join - more shirts were made. That is what I care about— Give to what you care about! I give so that others may have the same, or hopefully even better, experience that I was able to have!

Q: Why did you decide to attend Virginia Tech?

GB: Virginia Tech has it all! Outstanding academics, beautiful campus and surrounding area, world class sports teams, the best community, and retrospectively: Sharkey’s.

Q: How has Virginia Tech Athletics impacted you?

GB: Some of the most core memories I have from college revolve around Virginia Tech Athletics! Celebrating a Hokie win! Mourning a Hokie loss. Road tripping to away games during COVID! 6OT Win! Traveling to UVA for volleyball! The thrill of a Hokie lacrosse stick being slammed on the field after a goal! And it didn’t stop when I graduated in 2021! I still get to see Hokies thrive! METALLICA IN LANE! Seeing Trever Cone play on Sunday at Oakmont! Playoff Nickeil Alexander-Walker! Marisa Cerchio’s European career! Khalil Herbert runs! A Joey Slye or Brian Johnson field goal! The list never ends!

Q: What is your favorite Virginia Tech sports memory?

GB: 2017 VT vs. Delaware. The home opener. My very first time in Lane Stadium. Enter Sandman. Hokie Stone jerseys. Lunch Pail Defense. Big sacks. Skipper Cannon. Long balls. 27-0. TECH TRIUMPH.

Q: Why would you encourage other Virginia Tech Recent Graduates to give?

GB: I am because we are. Everything and everyone in my life has shaped me into who I am today. Virginia Tech Athletics played a large role. I hope others experience what I was fortunate enough to experience. Think about this: your donation could be the one that puts us over the edge and wins us the national championship! And that would be epic.

From day one at Virginia Tech, we were told to Start Jumping, no matter where you are in life, keep that Hokie Spirit alive within you. Keep Jumping!
