BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones and running back Terion Stewart have been named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented annually to the college football player judged by a panel of sportscasters, sportswriters, National Collegiate Athletic Association head coaches and members of the Maxwell Football Club to be the best all-around in the United States.

Drones (6-2, 235) enters his third season as the starting quarterback for the Hokies. Last season he started nine games, completing 136 of 224 passes for 1,562 yards, a 61 percent completion rate. The Houston, Texas product accounted for 10 passing TDs while rushing for 336 rushing yards and six scores.

Stewart (5-9, 222) joined the Hokies in the offseason from Bowling Green where he appeared in 11 games in 2024, making six starts. Stewart rushed for 898 yards and six touchdowns last season on his way to All-MAC First Team honors. He is one of 14 Bowling Green players to rush for at least 2,000 yards in a career.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell who was a former standout at Swarthmore College and a renowned sportswriter and football official.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 11, while the three finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 25. The winner of the 89th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 11.
