BLACKSBURG – For the first time in over two decades, Virginia Tech will face off against Providence in an early-season matchup as part of the 2025 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series on Nov. 8 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

This game will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the Hokies and the Friars, rekindling a rivalry that hasn't appeared on the court since Feb. 4, 2004, when Tech secured a decisive 12-point victory. The Hokies currently hold a narrow 5-4 edge in the all-time series.

“We’re honored and excited to be part of the 2025 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip Off at Mohegan Sun,” said Virginia Tech head coach Mike Young. “It’s a first-class event that showcases some intriguing matchups, and we’re looking forward to a great one with Providence. I have fond memories from the last time we were up there in 2021, and I look forward to taking our team back in November.”

Those fond memories trace back to Tech's 81-73 overtime upset of No. 3 Villanova the last time the Hokies ventured to Mohegan Sun to start the 2020-21 season.

Tech enters the upcoming season with four key returners–Tobi Lawal, Jaden Schutt, Ben Hammond and Tyler Johnson–who played pivotal roles last season, bringing leadership, experience and a hunger to elevate the program. Completing that core is an exciting group of newcomers, adding versatility, athleticism and depth to an already talented Hokie roster.

Providence, a consistent contender in the BIG EAST, finished 12-20 overall and 6-14 in league play last season. It was the Friars’ second season under former George Mason head coach Kim English.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series annually showcases some of the most storied programs in college basketball, providing fans with elite matchups early in the season. Tech will be playing in one of its events for the sixth straight year.
