BLACKSBURG ā€“ No. 12/16 Virginia Tech clinched the series against No. 13/16 Stanford for its third ACC series win of the season with an 8-7 win on Saturday at Tech Softball Park.

The Hokies recorded the first triple play in program history, a 7-4-3 triple play that started with a diving catch by Lyla Blackwell. Tech followed it up with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the comeback win.

How It Happened: Virginia Tech 8, Stanford 7
The Hokies started the game with a bang. After a bases-loaded hit by pitch to bring in a run, Zoe Yaeger continued her stellar weekend with a two-RBI single up the middle to make it 3-0 Hokies after the bottom of the first.

Stanford scored a run off a home run to left field in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit and the Cardinal added four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth with Stanford threatening, Tech turned the first triple play in school history. Lyla Blackwell made a diving catch in left field and throws to second base and first base solidified the momentum-changing triple play.

The Hokies exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. A two-RBI double from Cori McMillan, her 200th career hit, tied the game and Michelle Chatfield followed it up with an RBI single to right field. With Chatfield on second, Rachel Castine blasted a two-run home run to left field to take an 8-5 lead.

The Cardinal once again threatened in the top of the seventh and scored two more runs, but Emma Lemley got the Hokies out of the jam to secure the 8-7 win.

Sophie Kleiman earned her eighth win of the season. Emma Mazzarone made her 10th start of the season and recorded four strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.
