BLACKSBURG – Pushing plenty of traffic around the bases on Tuesday afternoon, the Virginia Tech baseball team motored its way to the 13-2 victory against VCU during a seven-inning game shortened by run rule at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
Celebrating his 21st birthday, sophomore designated hitter David McCann went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, batting in Garrett Michel during the fourth inning to supply the hosts with a double-digit lead. McCann was one of 10 distinct Hokies who crossed the plate during Tuesday’s contest, one of 10 who finished in the hit column and one of eight who recorded at least one RBI.
Pairing 14 hits with nine walks, Virginia Tech (14-7) balanced its scoring, rushing out to the 6-1 lead after three innings of play before rallying for five runs during the bottom of the fourth inning. On the mound, the Hokies handled the Rams with ease, receiving two-plus innings apiece from starter Chase Swift and Mathieu Curtis; in total, five pitchers combined for eight strikeouts while issuing a lone walk.
VCU (4-16) held the 1-0 lead from the start as Jacob Lee homered during the first at-bat of the game. Backing Swift, Virginia Tech answered immediately with Cam Pittman going from first to third on Ben Watson’s single to left center field, soon scoring on Jackson Cherry’s RBI single into right field.
Making his fifth start of the season behind the dish, catcher Anderson French set a rookie season high with three RBIs, providing run-scoring singles during his opening two at-bats of the game.
French followed McCann’s one-out double during the bottom of the second inning with his RBI knock up the middle that put Virginia Tech in front for the first time, 2-1. Two batters later, Jared Davis widened the Hokies’ lead to 4-1, driving a two-run homer to left field at a projected distance of 406 feet.
Walks to Hudson Lutterman and Garrett Michel during the bottom of the third inning led to the demise of VCU starter Nick Frers, who departed after two and two-thirds innings pitched with two runners in scoring position. French greeted reliever Brayden McCollough with contact through the right side, scoring both Lutterman and Michel to pad the hosts’ lead at 6-1.
Virginia Tech loaded the bases three batters into the fourth inning with Davis having to stop at third base on Ben Watson’s single into left field. Jackson Cherry (RBI walk) and Lutterman (RBI groundout) crept the Hokies’ lead to 8-1 while Michel and McCann proceeded to break the inning open, barreling back-to-back doubles to assert the 11-1 advantage.
Nick Locurto added an RBI single for Virginia Tech during the fifth inning while Jake Slade capped the Hokies’ scoring with his sacrifice fly scoring Mycah Jordan.
