Five former Virginia Tech baseball stars compete in MLB Spring Breakout

Gavin Cross, Carson DeMartini, Jack Hurley, Carson Jones and TJ Rumfield hit the diamond during Major League Baseball's spring training prospect showcase

BLACKSBURG - Knocking on the door of the big leagues, five former Virginia Tech baseball stars competed in Major League Baseball's second annual Spring Breakout weekend, a four-day prospect showcase held between March 13 and March 16 at spring training facilities around the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues.

HIGHLIGHTS

Gavin Cross (Kansas City) threw out Arizona's Ryan Waldschmidt at third base from right field, ending the first inning of the team's March 14 game. [WATCH]

Carson DeMartini (Philadelphia) crushed a go-ahead, solo homer during the bottom of the seventh inning of the Phillies' March 14 win against Pittsburgh. DeMartini scored two runs during the contest. [WATCH]

Carson Jones (Seattle) drew a walk and later came around to score during the top of the eighth inning of the Mariners' March 14 game against Cleveland.

TJ Rumfield (New York [A.L.]) earned a bases-loaded walk, forcing in a run during the second inning of the Yankees' March 15 game against Baltimore.
