BLACKSBURG — The trio of Jaydon Young, Ben Hammond and Jaden Schutt combined for 67 points, and Virginia Tech outlasted Syracuse 101-95 on Saturday.

Playing in their first overtime game since Dec. 21, 2022 at Boston College, the Hokies got 15 of their 19 points from Hammond and Young in the extra period. It was Tech's first overtime victory since March 9, 2022 when Darius Maddox hit the game-winner against Clemson in the ACC tournament in Brooklyn.

The Hokies (13-16, 8-10 ACC) outscored the Orange 19-13 in overtime. Hammond scored seven of his career-high 21 points in the extra five minutes, including a big 3-pointer to put the Hokies in front for good, and Young, who finished with a game-high 26 points, scored eight in overtime. Hammond had a career-high seven rebounds to go with seven assists and three steals.

Schutt's layup with 1:22 remaining in regulation put Virginia Tech ahead 78-77 lead, the Hokies' first lead since it was 4-2. The Yorkville, Ill., native finished the afternoon with a career-high 20 points on 6 for 7 shooting. After a Syracuse turnover, Mylyjael Poteat's turnaround jumper put the Hokies up by three with 27 seconds left but twice in the final seconds the Hokies made only one of two free throws. Trailing by three with four seconds left, Syracuse's Jaquan Carlos took advantage, hitting a 3-pointer from about 25 feet to force overtime.

Jyare Davis led Syracuse (12-17, 6-12 ACC) with 21 points and Eddie Lampkin Jr. added 16 points and 12 rebounds. J.J. Starling scored 16 points, Kyle Cuffe Jr. 13 and Chris Bell 11.

The Hokies had three score 20 or more points for the first time since Nov. 18, 2018 vs. No. 23 Purdue in the Charleston Classic championship game. Poteat had 14 points and Tyler Johnson added 10. It was Tech's fourth double-digit comeback win of the season.
