BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 17/18 Virginia Tech split its second day at the Purple & Gold Challenge, defeating UT-Arlington, 6-0, and falling to No. 7 LSU, 7-2, on Saturday at Tiger Park.
Bre Peck launched two home runs on the day while Jordan Lynch hit her first career home run against the Mavericks.
How It Happened: No. 18 Virginia Tech 6, UT-Arlington 0
Jordan Lynch wasted no time as she launched her first career home run to lead it off for the Hokies. Soon after, Bre Peck followed it up with her fourth home run of the season to make it a 2-0 game.
Peck was not done yet on the day as she blasted her second home run in the top of the third – a two-run shot to left field – to extend the Hokie lead to 4-0. Emma Mazzarone joined the home run party as well with a solo shot to left field.
A Maverick error made it a 6-0 game for the Hokies to end the fourth inning – a lead Tech held onto throughout the rest of the contest.
Sophie Kleiman earned her second win of the season with seven strikeouts.
How It Happened: No. 7 LSU 7, No. 18 Virginia Tech 2
Despite trailing early, the Hokies were on fire defensively. Jordan Lynch ended the third inning with a diving play towards the baseline and dove on the bag for the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, center fielder Bre Peck robbed a home run with an over-the-wall catch to end the inning.
Back-to-back singles put runners on first and second for the Hokies in the top of the sixth and RBIs from Peck and Michelle Chatfield earned the Hokies two runs – but Tech could not score any more in the final innings.
