Tech stays hot, sweeping doubleheader at home

The Hokies carry a nine-match winning streak going into ACC play next weekend.

BLACKSBURG – Tech remains undefeated at home with a two-win day, picking up victories over Furman and Richmond.

In the morning session, the Hokies faced off against the Furman Paladins, grabbing a 5-2 win.

Tech grabbed the doubles point in an exciting fashion. No. 67 Charlotte Cartledge and Özlem Uslu played in a tightly contested match but pulled out a 6-4 win. Arina Gamretkaia and Tara Gorinsek clinched doubles for the Hokies, also with a 6-4 victory.

In singles, Charlotte Cartledge clinched the match for the Hokies as she battled through a three-set match against Grace Thomas. Cartledge won the first set 6-4 but dropped the second 6-1. She fought in the third set to claim the individual and team victory after a 6-3 set win.

On Court 1, Uslu kicked off Tech as she claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sara Snyder. Laima Frosch added another point with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Macy Hitchcock.

During the afternoon match, Tech put on a dominant display over the Richmond Spiders, with a 6-1 win.

The doubles point once again went in favor of the home side, as the pairings of Cartledge and Uslu and Gamretkaia and Gorinsek both picked up 6-2 wins in speedy fashion.

Frosch (6-0, 6-1), Aksu (7-6(0), 6-4), and Uslu (6-3, 7-5) all picked up sweeps in their singles matches.

Gamretkaia added another singles win, with a three-setter over Abby Lee of Richmond, 6-7(4), 6-0, 1-0(3), joining Uslu as the two undefeated Hokies from the weekend.

Mulready picked up a three-set win on Court 6, as she battled with Claire De Lu 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
