BLACKSBURG – Making its 2025 regular season debut on Friday, the Virginia Tech baseball team punished Bucknell, 19-0, during the opening game of a doubleheader between the two programs at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park, despite the Hokies ultimately splitting the twin bill by their 8-6 loss to the Bison during game two.
Virginia Tech (1-1) witnessed 14 players chime in with hits on the opening day of the season, including 12 who did so during the Hokies’ 19-run win – the most lopsided shutout victory spanning the program’s ACC tenure (since 2005). Sophomore catcher David McCann was one of four Tech players who co-led the team with three hits during the doubleheader, cashing each in for extra bases: a double during game one followed by a triple and a home run during game two.
On the mound, Virginia Tech held Bucknell (1-1) to four hits during game one with starter Brett Renfrow and rookie Jake Marciano uniting for six strikeouts apiece through seven scoreless innings. However, timely hitting by the Bison during game two led to a pair of three-run innings by the visitors, the latter of which unraveled the Hokies’ 6-5 lead during the top of the seventh inning.
Virginia Tech will complete its three-game, season-opening series against Bucknell on Sunday, Feb. 16. First pitch at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.
