CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Carys Baker continued her hot shooting, scoring 13 second half points to lead the Hokies, but it was not enough to overcome the twelfth-ranked Carolina Tar Heels on their home floor Thursday night. It was the first loss in the series since 2022 for Tech.
The result moves Tech’s record to 16-9 (7-7), while the Heels advanced to 22-4 (10-3).
The Hokies trailed the majority of the game Thursday, briefly trailing by double digits in the first half before closing the gap and eventually taking the lead in the second 20 minutes.
Tech, who had Rose Micheaux back in the lineup, shot 43% from the field and a blistering 8-of-13 from beyond the arc. In addition to Baker’s 17, Matilda Ekh scored 13 on the strength of three triples for the third straight game and redshirt freshman Mackenzie Nelson added 10, her first double figure scoring game in ACC play.
The Heels had two athletes, Raniya Kelly (20) and Lexi Donarski (15) combine for more than 50% of their points while forward Alyssa Ustby pulled down 16 rebounds.
The Hokies will enjoy an open date on Sunday, before playing host to Stanford on Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.
