HUMACAO, Puerto Rico – The Virginia Tech men's golf team opened its spring season with a 12th-place showing at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate, which concluded Tuesday at Palmas del Mar Country Club (par 72, 7,122 yards).
The Hokies carded a 21-over 885 (303-293-289) led by Gareth Steyn's even-par 216 (73-70-73) to tie for 25th. Behind a final-round, 1-under 71, Ashton Harper tied for 38th at 4-over 220 (74-75-71).
Arkansas topped the team standings with a 21-under 843 (290-275-278), two shots clear of 46th-ranked TCU. Michigan (853) and Kennesaw State (854) were third and fourth, respectively.
The Razorbacks' Erich Fortlage claimed medalist honors behind a 10-under 206 (67-70-69), one stroke ahead of Claes Borregaard of Kennesaw State.
Tech is next in action March 10-11 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
