BLACKSBURG — Former Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer has been honored as a distinguished member of the American Football Coaches Association. Beamer was recognized at a reception Sunday as part of the AFCA Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. The organization cited Beamer's continued dedication to football and bettering communities, embodying the goals and values of the AFCA.

During his 29 seasons as Virginia Tech’s head coach, Beamer’s Hokies posted a 238-121-2 record. His 280 career victories, including 42 in his six seasons as head coach at Murray State, rank sixth in FBS history and are 13th most in NCAA history.

Beamer’s Hokies spent 84 consecutive weeks in the AP Top 25 Poll.  He guided the Hokies to three Big East titles and four ACC Championships. His most memorable year came in 1999, when he led the Hokies to the school’s first National Championship game appearance and was also named the 1999 National Coach of the Year.

Beamer led the Hokies to 23 consecutive bowl appearances, coaching 13 teams to 10 or more victories, including eight straight years of 10 or more wins following the Hokies' move to the ACC in 2004. Beamer is a 2018 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame.
