CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Virginia Tech freshman Benjamin Pomeranets was named ACC Freshman of the Week on Tuesday afternoon, per a league release. He garnered this recognition after a strong weekend performance, going undefeated in his two singles matches against Davidson and St. Bonaventure on Feb. 3.
Freshman of the Week is a new honor this season for men's tennis in the ACC, making Pomeranets the first Hokie to be named a Freshman of the Week.
Starting in the sixth position against Davidson, Pomeranets defeated Jerry Wang 6-1, 6-2, in a match that Tech would take 7-0. He would move up to the fourth spot against St. Bonaventure later that day, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jean Marrero.
A four-star recruit from Cleveland, Ohio, Pomeranets joined the Hokies' program ranked as the 51st best player in the nation for the class of 2023. He currently holds a 3-0 record in the early part of the season that has seen Tech's best start since 2008, beginning 2024 with a 5-0 record.
Virginia Tech will be back in action this Friday when they travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to face Middle Tennessee.
