BLACKSBURG — Virginia Tech opened its 2024-25 season with an 83-60 victory over Delaware State Monday night inside Cassell Coliseum, powered by newcomer Tobi Lawal's career-high 23 points.
The Hokies (1-0) took control early, building an 18-point advantage following Jaden Schutt's third 3-pointer of the game at the 7:38 mark of the first half. Tech led 40-32 at the break.
VT shot 47.3% (26-55) from the field to go along with 20 assists and 41 rebounds.
Joining Lawal in double figures were Mylyjael Poteat (14 points) and Jaydon Young (career-high 13 points). Poteat also distributed a game-high five assists.
Delaware State (0-1) was led by guard Martaz Robinson, who dialed up a game-high 30 points on 16 for 17 shooting from the foul line.
The Hokies will return to Cassell Coliseum on Friday to face USC Upstate for Military Appreciation Night at 7 p.m. ET.
