CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 12 Virginia Tech fell in the first round of the ACC Tournament to No. 8 North Carolina, 2-0, at Dorrance Field.
It was the Hokies’ first ACC Tournament appearance since 2020.
How it Happened
The Tar Heels were on the attack early as they tallied four shots in the opening 20 minutes. Two huge saves by Lauren Hargrove kept North Carolina off the board in the first half.
One of the best looks in the first 45 for the Hokies came on a cross from Emma Pelkowski, but Natalie Mitchell’s header went just wide.
Despite tallying just one shot in the first half, the Hokies began to respond in the second half. Tech tallied back-to-back corner kicks but were unable to find the back of the net.
It was not until the 67th minute that the Tar Heels got on the board after converting a penalty kick.
Just one minute later, the Tar Heels’ Kate Faasse landed a header to make it a 2-0 contest.
Tech continued to get opportunities in the final third but were unable to get on the board.
