BLACKSBURG – Punter Peter Moore will wear No. 25 when the Virginia Cavaliers travel to Blacksburg for the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash this weekend. The contest will be the fifth time in Moore’s career and the second time this season that the redshirt senior will honor the legacy of historic Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer. Moore and the Hokies will take the field when Tech welcomes the Cavaliers to Blacksburg on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. ET with live coverage on ACC Network.
Moore opened the Hokies’ season when the Davidsonville, Maryland product wore No. 25 against Vanderbilt on Aug. 31. In the contest, he kicked for 139 yards on three tries, ending with an average of 46.3 yards per punt. Through eleven starts this season, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound punter has punted for a total of 2,271 yards and has put 15 of his 50 punts inside the 20-yard line. Both his punt yardage and his average punt distance (45.4 yards per punt) rank in the top five of ACC punters.
When the Hokies take Worsham Field this Saturday, Moore will achieve new records in No. 25. The punter will become only one of two Tech football players in history to have worn the jersey five times, the other being current Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Divine Deablo. Additionally, Moore will be the first Hokie in history to open and close a regular season wearing Frank Beamer’s jersey.
The weekly tradition of wearing No. 25 started in 2016 and has continued since then. Each week, a member of the special teams wears the number to recognize how influential Frank Beamer was to Tech football both as a player and a coach. The jersey number was retired in 2002. Fans can find more information on who has worn the jersey here.
