And it all starts with No. 1 – Tobi Lawal.
A junior transfer from VCU, Lawal can score in bunches, including a career-high 23 points in the season opener versus Delaware State. The forward has been steady, eclipsing double-digit scoring in all three contests and has been a presence down low, too, on the glass, averaging 8.7 rebounds per game. He registered his first double-double of the season in Tech's 58-52 victory over Winthrop on Monday night.
Another standout for the Hokies has been Jaden Schutt, who drilled five 3-pointers against Winthrop en route to a career-high 17 points. A transfer from Duke, the 6-foot-5 guard has also been a solid distributor, dishing out seven assists. Returner Mylyjael Poteat has picked up where he left off last year, averaging 12.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists.
As a team, Tech has been able to get to the rim at will, ranking in the top 50 nationally for free-throw attempts per game (27). It also has held the clamps defensively, holding teams to an average of just 62 points per game, and crashes the glass hard offensively, ranking in the top 60 in the country for offensive rebounds per game (14). In fact, the Hokies have pulled down 42 offensive rebounds through their first three games – the most in their first three games since the 2015-16 season (46).
