BLACKSBURG – No. 21 Virginia Tech took down SMU, 1-0, on Thursday night at Thompson Field.
The Hokies are now 4-0 at home in ACC play this season. Tech improves to 5-1-1 through seven ACC matches, with its 16 points being the most through seven games since 2013.
How it Happened
The first half was a close contest with both teams’ defenses limiting shots. Lauren Hargrove made a diving save to her right in the fifth minute to stop the Mustangs’ best look of the night.
The Hokies’ offense came to life in the second half – outshooting the Mustangs 11-1 in the final 45. Off a corner, Natalie Mitchell delivered a perfect cross to Taylor Price who headed the ball into the back of the net to make it a 1-0 game.

It is Price’s fifth goal over the past four games.
Tech continued to pressure but was unable to extend the lead. Anna Weir had another solid look for the Hokies in the 73rd minute but her shot from inside the 18-yard-box was saved.
The Hokies collected their eighth shutout of the season in the victory and their third shutout in ACC play.
